The Reader is an exciting new volunteering project that connects those with a love of reading and literature to elderly and vulnerable residents who would benefit from a shared interest with their befriender.
Although lockdown restrictions are slowly being lifted, social isolation affects many Notting Hill Genesis residents. At the beginning of the year our volunteer programme launched a new project with one of our charity partners, The Reader. We are currently seeking volunteers to participate in this exciting project.
If you would like to make a difference to some of our most vulnerable residents by reading to them regularly over the phone or via a video call, we would love to hear from you.
The placement involves a six-month commitment which begins with a half-day training workshop that will equip you with all the information you need to get started. The Reader will provide access to suggested reading materials which you can choose from to help you plan your sessions.
Ongoing reading support sessions will also be available, so you can link with other volunteers on the project, share tips, advice and experiences. You will also be working under the supervision of our volunteer programme, who will be your first point of contact and will regularly be in touch to track the progress of you and your reading buddy.
Attendance at the training workshop is mandatory. The next date will be Tuesday 11 May, 9.30am-3.00pm.
If this volunteer role sounds interesting, please email volunteering@nhg.org.uk. To find out more about the project and the role, visit the Reader website.
Although this project will be facilitated remotely to begin with, we hope to introduce face-to-sessions in the future if it is safe and practical to do so.
