Notting Hill Genesis helps young residents prepare for exams

Notting Hill Genesis (NHG) has provided funding to help young residents aged between nine and eleven improve their maths and English skills and help them prepare for their SAT exams
The 51 residents along with 359 other pupils also attended a graduation event in East London for the after school programme overseen by NHG’s partner, Tutors United.

Tutors United offers group tutoring in core subjects with a specially devised curriculum designed by teachers, and is aimed at helping primary school children from less privileged backgrounds. Pupils receive one hour of tuition each week, alternating between English and maths for an entire academic year. All lessons cover a multitude of topics in English and maths and help to prepare pupils for their SATs tests and the transition into secondary school.
As well as supporting young people to increase their educational attainment, Tutors United supports  university students to be trained and employed as tutors delivering the weekly sessions, giving them valuable skills and experiences to support them post-graduation.
"Tutors United is not a company, but a family, and the experience has been incredible."
NHG aims to support residents in Woodberry Down, Hackney and Grahame Park, Barnet, especially where there is long term change and deprivation. Nearly two thirds of pupils from low-income backgrounds are not ‘secondary ready’ by the end of primary school.
And finally, this project supports the parents too by providing weekly feedback on their child’s progress, delivering parent sessions that gives them on overview of what is taught, get them involved in their own English and Maths challenges and provide them with resources for home revision and practice. The aim of this support is to give them the tools and empowerment to help continue their child’s learning during and after the programme.
"100 % of parents agree/ strongly agree they were happy with the service from Tutors United and 92.9% agree/strongly agree that their child had improved in either Maths and/or English since attending. Of all the pupils participating in this programme in 2017-18, 51% increased their Maths results and 63% achieved the top three writing standards."

Samantha Cheadle, Social & Economic Regeneration Manager at NHG, said: “We see this project as helping to close the attainment gap by providing free English and Maths tutoring service to those who would otherwise find this provision financially inaccessible. Supporting our young people to be able to have the best start in life is at the core of what we do.
Earlier this year, 51 residents along with 359 other pupils attended a graduation event in East London for the after school programme overseen by NHG’s partner, Tutors United.
Samantha continued: “The graduation event was a chance to celebrate the amazing achievements of our pupils and recognise all of their hard work over the past year.
“It was an afternoon full of awards, special speeches and even videos starring our incredible pupils!”
“The Programme has been a great help to my daughter. Her Maths has improved dramatically, and she has made some improvement in her English Creative writing. Keep up the good work!”

Joel Davis, CEO at Tutors United said: “We deliver confidence-boosting, attainment-raising tuition to primary school pupils, ensuring socio-economic background doesn’t hinder how much a child can achieve in life. We do this by hiring, training and paying university students to deliver after school group tutoring in core subjects. We are the affordable option for families and housing associations who want to see fantastic results for primary school children from less privileged backgrounds.”
