Working together to celebrate nature with residents on St Martin’s Estate

Our teams have joined with residents on St Martin’s Estate, Tulse Hill to create a nature-inspired mural for the community.

The area behind High Trees Community Hall on the estate was chosen by the local gardening group and residents’ association as the location for a mural and garden area improvements.

The mural was delivered in partnership with AeroArts and kindly sponsored by our grounds contractors, Just Ask.

James, the lead artist from AeroArts, held consultation sessions with young residents to co-create and design the mural. Residents were invited to work with the artist over three days during the school holidays to paint the wall and bring the design to life. The finished mural has become a conversation piece, bringing positivity and colour to the area.

Stephen Kearney, chair of St Martin’s tenants and resident association, said:

“Decades of living on a housing estate makes you realise there is so much potential all around you: potential in people, in places, and in the unimaginable. In August 2023 we had 10 blank garage walls staring blankly at the rear of Godolphin House. Now we have a single mural, full of colour, light, and imagination, joyfully spanning such diverse themes as urban wildlife, flora and fauna, and rolling countryside. This mural is a triumph of imagination and a credit to all involved.”

Natalie Azimi, a local resident, said:

“My children are proud to have been a part of the mural project. They love going outside, looking at it, and showing family and friends when they come round.”

She added: “My youngest son loves art, and it gave him an opportunity to use material he's never used before.”

To celebrate completion of the project, we revisited recently and held a small launch event with residents, colleagues, and sponsors. GoodGym, our volunteer partner, put together plant troughs, planted up by Just Ask. In spring 2024 we plan to plant a seating and contemplation area right next to the mural.
