The mandala designs, created by young people on the estate, are now in place on balconies.
In 2024 we told you about an exciting project where young people on the Aylesbury estate were tasked with creating mandala designs, paying homage to the old iconic Aylesbury architecture.
As construction began on the site, known as First Development Site C (FDS C), the children and young residents worked with local artist Harriet Mena Hill. They drew their favourite parts of the existing estate, which were incorporated into the new buildings as patterns in the metalwork on the undersides of the balconies, helping to preserve the estate’s history within the development.
The drawings the young people produced were taken apart and the elements reconstructed into decorative Aylesbury-inspired patterns.
The resulting designs were a celebration of Aylesbury past and a chance for the young people to have their artwork permanently captured for generations to come.
Fast forward to today
The youngsters have been patiently waiting for the site to take shape and we recently worked with specialist manufacturer, Sapphire Balconies Ltd, to install the decorative metalwork on the balconies of the finished flats on the site.
The final designs look fantastic, and it was a proud moment for all involved.
