New research by NHG Homes exposes the emotional and mental health impact of Britain’s homeownership crises on 20–35-year-olds, more than 70% of whom in London are “doing the right things financially, but still not getting ahead.”
Its findings have shown that four in 10 have less than £50 left at the end of the month, making it impossible to build the deposit they need, and only one in seven from that age group believe homeownership will ever be achievable.
Prompted by the research, NHG Homes has launched The Door Club (Deposit Out of Reach), a new community for aspiring first-time buyers who feel the door to homeownership has been closed on them.
They will be able to access genuine, expert support, with qualified Money Coach Laura Ann Moore playing a central role in the initiative.
Laura said: “These findings don’t surprise me, but the do concern me deeply. What this research makes clear is that an entire generation is doing everything they’ve been told to do – budgeting, saving, going without – and still feel like they’re running on a treadmill going nowhere. When 63% of young people say financial stress is affecting their mental health, we have to stop treating this as a purely economic conversation.
“Young people aren’t failing a money, the system is failing them. That’s exactly why the support The Door Club offers matters so much. It’s not just about practical financial advice; it’s about giving people the tools, the confidence and the mindset to know that their situation is not their fault, and that there is a way forward.”
The Door Club will offer:

- Dedicated advice and support via the NHG Homes website, including guidance on shared ownership, deposit-saving strategies and navigating the property market
- A community for people who feel locked out of homeownership, so they know they are not alone, and there is a path forward
