It’s really important that you prioritise your rent and arrears payments over the festive period, even when other costs are mounting up.
When you signed your tenancy agreement, you entered into a legal contract with us. That contract includes a promise to pay your rent so that you have the right to remain in your home.
We understand that the lead up to Christmas can be an expensive time of year. Planning early and spreading the cost of Christmas can help make sure you don't overspend.
Work out what you can afford
Begin by making a list of your predicted Christmas costs including food, presents, decorations, treats and any other festive spends. Planning all your purchases ahead of time will help to avoid costly impulse buys. Preparation now can help relieve a lot of financial stress over the coming weeks.
Next, write down the amount of your priority costs such as rent and bills that must be paid every month including December and January. This will help you see what you can afford and which festive extras you need to cut back. You can also use an online Budget Planner tool to help organise your Christmas spending.
Stick to your budget. Don’t be tempted by items not on your budgeted for list.
If you haven’t already, it’s a good idea to set up a Direct Debit for your rent payment. That way your rent payment is taken from your bank account at the same time each month, before you have a chance to spend the money allocated for it.
Spread the cost of Christmas by adding little things to your shopping each week and put them away ready for the big day.
