£2.8m fund will mean greener, more affordable heating for residents

Notting Hill Genesis (NHG), one of London’s largest not-for-profit housing associations, has been awarded £2.8 million through a government scheme to improve heat networks, with the funds set to benefit over 750 NHG properties across London.

The funds awarded to NHG through the government’s Heat Network Efficiency Scheme, was the largest single grant awarded, representing 18% of the funding round.

NHG will use the grant to upgrade vital heat networks across London, ensuring they operate more efficiently and provide residents with heating and hot water at a lower-cost and with a lower environmental impact. These improvements will add to the £1 billion NHG plans to invest in its homes in the next 10 years to ensure all our residents have a safe, warm and comfortable home.

The new funding will be focused on upgrading heat networks across NHG’s Stratford Halo estate in Stratford, Clive Lloyd House in Haringey, and Gloucester Court in North Kensington, which together provide vital heating and hot water services to 758 residents. The grant will help to address issues including heat loss, corrosion and blockages, high operating costs and overheating in communal areas, supporting NHG’s mission to provide affordable, safe and comfortable homes for residents.

NHG’s proactive, holistic and data-driven approach to heat network upgrades takes into consideration key system metrics including age, efficiency and expenditure, giving a score based on performance and condition. Upgrades are then prioritised based on need and impact, reducing downtime and service disruptions for our residents.

This aligns with the HNES scheme’s objectives of reducing energy consumption, lowering carbon emissions, and improving heating and hot water services for customers.

Lower gas and electricity consumption by NHG’s heat plants is a positive for residents as lower energy costs translate into lower heat tariffs, bringing down bills. This framework ensures that NHG’s heat networks are not only maintained effectively but continuously improved to meet future demands and sustainability goals.

Since the start of the Heat Network Efficiency Scheme, NHG has deployed over £10 million of government funding to improving heating and hot water systems in residents’ homes across London. This recent award forms part of Round 10 of the Heat Network Efficiency Scheme, which has allocated £15.6 million to organisations across England and Wales to improve heating and hot water provision for 10,400 residents.

Matthew Cornwall-Jones, Chief Homes Officer at Notting Hill Genesis said: “At NHG we are committed to investing £1bn into our homes over the next 10 years to provide safe, warm and comfortable living environments for our residents. Securing this additional funding means more affordable and more environmentally-friendly heating and hot water for more than 700 homes – which could help our residents live in greater and warmer comfort, and bring down their energy bills.

"We are grateful to the Government for recognising our commitment to our residents and for awarding us this further grant to enable us to continue making vital investments in residents’ homes.”

Joe Powell, MP for Kensington and Bayswater, added: I'm delighted that residents of Gloucester Court will directly benefit from the Government’s £77 million Heat Network Efficiency Scheme. This will help reduce pressures on energy bills and improve living standards. I launched our Safe and Healthy Homes campaign for Kensington & Bayswater because I believe everyone deserves that basic right. This project will help deliver it.”
