How to bleed a radiator

What you'll need:

  • Radiator key or flat-head screwdriver
  • Small container or bowl
  • Cloth or towel

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Prepare your system Turn off your heating system and allow radiators to cool down completely before starting.
  2. Find the bleed valve Locate the bleed valve - it's usually at the top corner of the radiator and requires a radiator key or screwdriver.
  3. Position your container Place a small bowl or container directly under the bleed valve to catch any water.
  4. Open the valve Slowly turn the bleed valve counterclockwise using your radiator key. You'll hear air hissing as it escapes.
  5. Release the air Wait for the hissing to stop and water to begin flowing steadily from the valve.
  6. Close the valve Once water flows consistently, turn the valve clockwise to close it securely and prevent leaks.
  7. Clean up and test Wipe up any spilled water with a cloth. Turn your heating system back on and check that the radiator heats evenly.
