A new development offering almost 300 homes for rent through Folio London, the market rent arm of Notting Hill Genesis, has taken a step closer with a ground-breaking ceremony at its east London site.
Fresh Wharf, near the River Roding in Barking, is a two-phase scheme offering a total of 911 homes as well as new shops, cafes and parks, transforming 10 acres of former brownfield industrial land into a new riverside destination.
The ceremony was attended by Cllr Darren Rodwell, leader of Barking and Dagenham Council, as well as Cllr Saima Ashraf and Cllr Cameron Geddes. Representatives of Notting Hill Genesis and
Countryside, our partners in the project, also took part.
Demolition started in February, and the initial completions in the first phase of the development, which will deliver 532 homes, are expected in autumn 2020. The entire development is due to complete by 2026.
Fresh Wharf will comprise one, two and three-bedroom apartments and three-bedroom houses, and these homes are designed to maximise the benefit of the riverside frontage and city views. The scheme also includes a new, large, open park at the heart of the development with two further landscape-led public realm areas.
The existing boat moorings will be re-instated with additional facilities added to the development. In the Northern Square there will be a selection of new local shops, cafes and restaurants which will add to the vibrancy of this exciting new place to live.
Situated along the banks of the River Roding, Fresh Wharf is ideally located, less than a 15 minute walk or five minute cycle to Barking Station. The site is also adjacent to the North Circular and A13 for excellent transport links to London City Airport and Canary Wharf.
Lizzie Stevens, director of Folio London, Notting Hill Genesis’ market rent brand, said: “This is a really exciting project for us, providing 280 market rent homes available exclusively through Folio London.
The housing shortage in London affects people from all walks of life and in all circumstances, and we provide homes for people who want to rent privately but want the reassurance of renting with a trusted name, with a dedicated portfolio manager who will know them and their home, and without having to pay any reference or admin fees.
John Hughes, Group Development Director at Notting Hill Genesis, said: “This is a very exciting project for us, providing much-needed homes and public open space in a borough where we haven’t developed before. We are committed to creating a stunning waterside community where people will be thrilled to live and unwind, and I know Countryside and Barking and Dagenham Council share that determination.”
Councillor Darren Rodwell, Leader of Barking and Dagenham Council, said: “The River Roding is one of east London’s unsung waterways. This new development will help us revitalise the river and create one of London’s most vibrant waterside communities.”
