New accolade for 'exemplary' Royal Albert Wharf

Our Royal Albert Wharf project to create thousands of new riverside homes has been named Large Development of the Year at the Brick Awards 2018.

The awards, run by the Brick Development Association, celebrate exemplary clay brick architecture across the country.

Phase one of Royal Albert Wharf includes 350 new homes within three blocks, more than 40 per cent of which are affordable housing. It is part of a wider regeneration that will ultimately provide more than 1,500 new homes and commercial premises.

Praising the scheme, judges said: “This is a carefully articulated series of buildings around generous public spaces that animate one of east London’s disused docks. The materials generate distinct characters for each of the buildings, which are in-keeping with the industrial past while bringing colour and finesse to the area.

“The project is housing-led but animated by artists’ studios, cafes, shops and gallery spaces. It works exceptionally well in relation to the dock.

“The choice of brick and ceramic is interesting and varied. The three different brick mixtures all work well together and a green glazed, profiled brick is used for decorative effect. Detailing and execution are excellent and contribute to an exemplary response to the brief.”

The scheme is designed by Maccreanor Lavington Architects and RMA Architects. The bricks used are Con Mosso by Wienerberger and St Joris Transparent Green Glazed by Ibstock.

The brickwork contractor is City Brickwork Ltd.
