Yolande St Phillip is a service manager at Conrad Court, an extra care scheme in Lewisham. She has explained how she got into such a rewarding job:
"There has been lots in the press and on social media lately about people making career changes during the pandemic. I have been thinking about the difficult times we’re living in and how fulfilling it is to be working in care.
"I made a significant career change in 2010 after having worked for a long time in the betting industry, initially as a cashier and later as a manager, Then a flyer dropped through my door – Notting Hill Genesis were looking for carers. It piqued my interest.
Here was a role that needed compassion and empathy which offered an opportunity to really make a difference.
"Although I had no experience of working in care, the assessment centre I attended picked up my values and transferable skills and I joined as a casual (bank) care worker. Quite soon a permanent post became vacant and from there I took the opportunity to learn new skills, particularly on how to use online care planning modules. This led to new job opportunities within the business and training opportunities.
"I now have Health and Social Care diplomas to level 3 and a level 5 qualification from the ILM. Today I am an Extra Care Manager of a stunning facility in Lewisham, the 24-Hour care team I manage provides around 600 hours of care per week to older people who live in their own self-contained purpose-built flats
"This has been, and is still, a rewarding journey. Not only have I felt invested in my development and career but every day I feel like I am making a difference to people’s lives."
