Volunteer opportunity in Brent

In partnership with Notting Hill Genesis, The Reader is looking for people in Brent to lead shared reading groups in sheltered housing settings. Volunteers are provided with in depth transformative training, plus ongoing support from a thriving community of reader leaders.

Shared reading brings people together to read stories and poems aloud, creating powerful moments of connection and space to have meaningful conversations.

“The Reader has added a different dimension to my understandings, my appreciation and my sorrows. I can’t praise it enough. It’s given me a new stride in my step.”
Cynthia, volunteer reader leader

About The Reader

The Reader is a national charity, based in Liverpool, and we use the power of literature and reading aloud to transform lives. They bring small groups of people together to read great stories and poems aloud, and to talk about our responses, thoughts and feelings, creating powerful moments of connection. They call this shared reading. Each shared reading group is facilitated by a trained volunteer or staff member.

Their work supports everyday wellbeing as part of preventative mental health strategies, builds meaningful connections with others and tackles social isolation. In groups, thry use stories and poetry to find a language for deeply held experiences in a social, supportive environment and meet people where they are.
